园中摆设的观赏石,多是石形奇特,以单取胜,单块特置,大小不拘。在设置这些单块赏石时要根据它的体量大小,描摹特点,因地制宜地装备它周围的空间环境。大者数丈,须绕行仰视,像苏州的瑞云峰、冠云峰,上海的玉玲珑等,体量都很大,就必须设置在空阔显豁的空间,方能充沛展示出它的美来。小者寸余,俯首谛视,方见其妙,就要设置相应的小环境来烘托它。至小者,甚至能够置于盆中,用作盆景,此时盆即园,石即山,数茎寸草即成茂林。
